Curtainsiders and Load Restraints
It is important to use the correct type of vehicle when transporting goods. Curtainside trucks are essentially flatbed vehicles. This can combine certain advantages when transporting specific loads. Curtainside trailers can be single or double decks and are ultimately flatbed trailers. They have protection from weather as large curtains cover goods. The curtains are designed to protect while adding very little excess weight. They offer protection in all weather conditions meaning that goods have the protection of a dry van, the space of a flat deck and quick, easy loading and unloading. All positive attributes when adhering to a shipping schedule.
The design allows the canvas curtains to be pulled back to allow loads to be placed inside. This means that it has easy accessibility. It is also a secure dry storage space where the load will safely make it’s journey. Most trailer floors are made of wood or with wood and steel beams adjacent to the wood offering protection against wear and tear. The steel can also offer protection against weather. It is common to find checker plates at the back end of a trailer. This offers extra protection as this is an area. Vehicles that can be exposed to more water from the rear wheels so these plates offer protection.
Positive Fit / Blocking
This is when a load is placed inside a trailer where there is little or no room between the loads and the trailer. This means that little or any strapping is required and loads are kept in place through tight contact with the trailer and eliminates tipping or sliding. It is essential that a positive fit load is strong enough to withstand the movement that the direction and weight is going in when in transport.
Nets
Another method of load restraints is securing loads with nets. There are different types of netting to stabilize loads for haulage. For example, fixed kite systems can be used to cover and restrain loads of varying products. They can be used to cover multiple loads of freight or cover the entire length of a load. These moveable netting systems can be placed to fit different load sizes and shapes before the safe transporting of goods takes place.
Sheeting and Straps
Sheeting can be used to haul loads in different instances, for example. If a load is of uneven sizes or height when placed on a trailer or if the goods being transported are classed as fragile, sheeting can be a safe and reliable option for transporting. Straps and buckles are a common type of fastening that is used in haulage. Straps are typically fastened to the carriage and secure to the trailer to allow extra security, safety and stabilisation.
